Right, today I would like your personal opinion and/or advice on something.
Let me explain:
When I drove up to Nottingham to son No.2’s stag do a few weeks back with my good friend, we were discussing all sorts of things. Amongst them I asked him whether he had ever toyed with the idea of having a tattoo done.
To my surprise he answered that he had and that he is still thinking of doing it.
I, too, have thought about having one done (rebellion? mid-life crisis?) and we both agreed that we should find a good upmarket place and have a look at designs.
The envisaged tattoo would be similar in position and size as shown below but would be somewhat lower so that you would not see them when you are wearing a shirt with collar but you would see it wearing t-shirts, etc.
Have not decided on any motive but I guess it would be difficult to find the right thing.
I don’t want anything too big and rather have something slender rather than bulky.
Big question is:
Am I completely bonkers or should I go ahead??

Hate to be a kill-joy 'n' all, but I have to say - as YOUR DAUGHTER - that my initial reaction to this is option (b)BONKERS!
I suppose that I might just have a different opinion if you weren't my Dad but, unfortunately for you in this instance, you are.
Why don't you do something BONKERS that I WOULD approve of? e.g. going to live in Italy?
Honestly, I shall have words with your "good friend". He can't be a good influence.
Then again, part of me (a very small part in this instance I'm afraid) says, "Why not? You only live once, after all." But I try to shove that thought to the back of my mind...
Right, well this all sounds very familiar because my 'ole man' has been thinking the exact same thing and has been throwing it into any conversation we have for the past few months, even if the subject is completely unrelated - but I think that must be a bloke thing!
Anyway, my view is that yes, quite categorically I believe you are all crazy guys as well as having a mid-life crisis, trying to regain your mis-spent youth and generally be a bit rebellious. But that's OK I'm sure it'll happen to me one day and I'll end up having my tongue pierced or something!
I'm not really a great lover of tattoo's, but having said that, I do think a smallish, dark-coloured, tasteful tattoo can actually look quite nice. I also think it should be meaningful. For example, a chinese symbol (such as those we were looking at yesterday Erik) of your or your wife's name, or even a word like happiness or stud muffin or whatever is important to you, can be quite poignant and therefore very acceptable. Even sexy!
This doesn't mean though Erik that you get a tattoo of a big german sausage or a picture of a keg of beer you know!
And obviously the "love / hate" tattooed across each knuckle does not fall into the "acceptable" category either, nor does an emblem of any football team, a swallow bird or a spider's web on your neck!
In short I suppose what I'm saying is "go for it", I think Kev will sooner rather than later. Just make sure it's fairly tasteful, not too colourful or big.

Personally, I HATE tattoos. I REALLY hate them.
I once quit dating an interesting ('ish...) guy because, when he rolled up his shirt sleeves, he had a big ugly tattoo on one arm.

I have 2 ways at looking at your dilemma Erik, firstly I to have faced your dilemma but always arrive back and am always slightly distressed at the vision that always presents itself to me of me sitting with Grandchildren at feet in the last chapter of my life – with shawl and slippers enjoying their company – when my youngest granddaughter slams the idyllic vision to a very abrupt screeching halt with her dulcet tones of “Grandma – why do you have that wrinkled and faded thing on your shoulder.”. But there again if life has taught me anything it is to live for the moment so therefore ‘Go for it’.
Bonkers! I absolutely hate tattoos, however you are an 'informed adult' as we say in CIC and therefore should know what you are doing. Why paint your body when you could redecorate your house instead? would make Jan happy and if you got fed up with it, you can change the decor! M
Definite mid-life crisis. Forget the tattoo and get a sports car!

I'm not the biggest fan of Tattos, but if you want to get one, why not? My Mom got two when she was in her mid-40's and although she now realizes it was a crisis, she still likes them. Hers can be covered though, one is near her breast and the other on her back shoulder. My suggestion to you is if you decide to get it, get something classy and something you can hide if you need too. Good Luck!

I used to hate tattoos, but they've kinda grown on me - as long as they're small, tasteful, and preferably not multi-coloured. Some people thought I was kinda nuts getting my nose pierced, but at this stage of my life, I'm not all that concerned with what other people thing. So if it's something you want, go for it.

So what if you don't? If you regret something as unimportant as a tattoo, you're probably worrying too much about everything - look back on it and laugh, and remember the time and place and when you had it done, much like putting dodgy pictures of yourself at 18 on your page.

If people are judging you on appearence...f*ck 'em, do you judge them on not having tattoo's and think they're nice people because they don't?

Tattoo's aren't a need, they're a want, indulgent manifestations of our creative self, paint me I'm naked......Personnaly when I die, I'm having mine framed so my kids can have unique works of art - Oh, that is one thing, never pick a tattoo out of a book, design your own so it is individual and meaningful to you - Tattoo kits on Ebay for £200, my kids can't wait to get drawing on my back permanently...I reckon I'll have a house with smoke coming out the chimney and stick men etc.....Fantastic
